b.3 Jul 1842, Ger, eo.1848, settled in Grayville (White Co) 1858. On 1 Jan 1862, joined Co.B, 60th Reg-Inf, Il.Vol., organized at Camp Dubois, Anna, IL by Col. Silas C. Toler. 17 Feb 1862, mustered in @ Carmi, IL by Capt. Watson. Desc: 20-year old, single, farmer, 5'8" tall, having dark hair, dark eyes & dark complexion, county of origin: White, IL. 22 Feb 1862, 60th IL saw first action in defense of Island No. 10 on the Miss. River til 14 Mar 1862. Battles: Corinth, Clear Creek, Tuscumbia, AL, Nashville & Columbia, TN, repulsing NBForest's attack. At Nashville til Jul 1863; to Murfreesboro, Columbia, Athens, up the Sequatchie Valley against Wheeler; Battle of Chattanooga, Ringold & Chickamauga station, Knoxville and Dalton. Battle of Buzzards Roost the 60th IL lost its heaviest casualties, 42. 18 Feb 1864 reenlisted @ Rossville, GA as Vet Vol, as did 3/4ths of the 60th IL. Rcvd. $28.17 for clothing, 2 months pay & $100 bounty. 13 Apr 1864, aft a short furlough to attempt healing, he "left sick" & was admitted to Chattanooga's Gen.Field Hosp.#1 for "broken leg veins" [rcvd. pushing cannon uphill at Nashville; it is believed he contracted tuberculosis while in the hospital]; Released 4 Oct 1864 to ret to his unit via rail, joined Sherman, who had just left Atlanta & was en March to Sea, via Augusta Rd, Milledgeville, Savannah; the Carolinas Campaign, Battles of Columbia, Averysboro, Bentonville. Occupied Goldsboro & marched to Raleigh, at wh/time Johnston surrendered. 19 May 1865, marched to Wash DC via Richmond, VA. 25 May 1865 participated in Grand Review w/Sherman's veteran volunteers. 12 Jun 1865, Louisville, KY as provost guard at Headqtrs, 14th Army Corps.
