gt. GEORGE LARGE was born November 25, 1841, in Noble County, Ohio, and in I856 came with his parents to Christian County, Ill., and settled in what is known as Buckeye Prairie. He served until the regiment was mustered out, being in every skirmish and battle from the beginning to the end, and third sergeant of his company at the muster out. He was married in 1868 to a Miss Mary Ann Cleary, from which union he has five children; his wife died in 1896. He has been a farmer since the war, making a specialty. of sheep raising. He now lives in Taylorville, ILL.

George G. Large was born on 25 Nov 1841 in Whigville, Noble, Ohio, United States, son of Samuel Large (1814–1891) and Eleanor Ellen Guiler (1822–1851). George enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and after his enlistment he was a Farmer.

Alfred's father Thomas A. Smith died on Saturday, 9 Aug 1845 at the age of 24 years, 4 months, 8 days.   Alfred's mother Edith Smith Lewis died on Monday, 22 Sep 1851 at the age of 28 years, 0 months, 20 days.

The Early Years

In 1850, George Large (aka Sarge), age eight, resided with his father Samuel, the head of household and a Farmer in Union, Monroe, Ohio, United States. His mother Eleanor maintained the household and also raised Ann E and William. In addition, the household included one boarder.   By 1860, the Large Family had relocated to Illinois (1856). George, age eighteen, resided with his father Samuel, the head of household and a Farmer in Christian County, Illinois (formerly Buckeye Prarie), United States. His stepmother Maria (aka Mariah) maintained the household and raised Ann E., William, Ellen, James (Robert), Jane and Susan H.

The Civil War

George G. Large a twenty-year-old from Rosemond, Illinois enlisted in the Union Army for three years as a Corporal on 12 Aug 1862. Corporal Large was assigned to Company A, 115th Regiment, Illinois Infantry on 15 Sep 1862.

Before his discharge Corporal Large was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. On 11 Jun 1865, Sergeant Large was discharged at Nashville, Tennessee. George was a member of GAR Post 392 in Taylorville, Illinois. George G. Large died on 4 Dec 1907.

Postbellum

George married Mary Ann O. (Mollie) Cleary in on 28 Nov 1867 in Taylorville, Christian, Illinois, United States. Prior to her death in 1896, they were married twenty-nine years. They had the following known children: Anne Eliza Large, Fannie Marie Large, Marion O. Large, Carrie Agnes Large and Roe Melville Large.

As of 1870, George, age twenty-eight, was the head of household and a Farmer, resided with his wife of three years, Mollie in Locust Township, Christian, Illinois, United States. Mollie maintained the household and George's brother William was a part of the household. In addition, three boarders were part of the household.    George, age thirty-eight, was the head of household and a Farmer, resided with his wife of thirteen years, Mollie in Locust Township, Christian, Illinois in 1880. Mary (Mollie) maintained the household and raised Annie, Fannie, Maria and Carrie Agnes. In addition, there was one boarder that was part of the household.

George's wife of twenty-nine years, Mary Ann “Mollie” Cleary Large died in 1896.

By 1900, George, age fifty-seven, was widowed, the head of household and a Landlord, resided with his family in Taylorville, Christian, Illinois, United States. George's adult daughters, Anna, Fannie, Marian, and Carrie maintained the household and helped raise their younger brother Roe.   George was in a pension record in 1907-1933 in United States.

Death & Burial

George G Large, son of Samuel Large and Eleanor Ellen Guiler, died on Wednesday, 4 Dec 1907 at the age of 66 years, 0 months, 9 days at his home on East Franklin Street in Taylorville, Christian County, Illinois, United States after a lengthy illness.

George was born in Ohio and came to Buckeye Prairie (now known as Christian County) when George was fifteen (about 1856). George resided in Locust Township until about the age of ten when the family moved to Taylorville. His wife, Mollie, passed away eleven years prior to his death.

Geoge served in the Union Army for three years and belongs to GAR of Taylorville, Illinois, a long time member of the M. E. Church and a Board Member of the Board of Education, East School District.

Those left to mourn the loss of Geoge are two daughters, Marian and Florence and one son, Roe, all living at home; five sisters Mrs. Anna Large McAfee, Rosemond, Illinois, Mrs. Ellen Large Denton, Taylorville, Illinois, Mrs. Susan Large Magew and Mrs. Jane Large Bonnell, Buckeye's Prarie, Illinois, and Mrs. Emma Large Cole, Owaneco, Illinois.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, Taylorville on Friday, 6 Dec 1907 and were officiated by Rev. Wood. George is interred and commemorated in Buckeye Prairie Cemetery, Christian County, Illinois, United States.

The Will of George G. Large, dated 13 Nov 1907 was mainly given to three children. The real estate value (280 acres in Rosemond and Locust Township) was $35,000, personal property was $5000.

The real estate is given to the following children: son, Roe Large (120 acres), daughter Marian/Marion Large (80 Acres) and daughter Fannie Large (80 Acres). The proceeds from the land will remain with the above mentioned children as long as they remain in the home and are single.

The testator requests his property be sold and invested in the proceeds of the estate.

Smaller proceeds go to the following: $100 to Buckeye Church, $100 to his sister Annie McAfee, and his son will receive the testator's horse and buggy.

The residue will be divided and equally shared between Roe, Marian and Fannie.
