First Sergt Lemuel S. Lee was from Vandalia and served in Co. H of the 8th Illinois Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. in August 28, 1865, but never mustered and he mustered out May 4, 1866 as a Sergeant.

On the back of the CDV photo is: "Truly yours Lemuel S. Lee First Sergt H Co. 8 Regt ILL VVI". He also wrote in his home town: "Vandalia Fayette Co. Illinois ICRR". Thelast initials apparently referring to the Illinois Central Rail Road.

The photo was either taken in New Orleans or Mobile/Montgomery, AL by Hinton & Oppenheimer and the 8th Infantry served in both states.
