Henry Fuller Leonard was born on 22 May 1842 in Lowell, LaSalle County, Illinois, United States, son of John Leonard (1806-1865) and Louisa Conant (1798-1872).

The Early Years

In 1850, Henry, age eight, resided with his father John, the head of household and a Farmer in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois, United States. His mother Louisa maintained the household and also raised Levi and Sarah.

The Civil War

At the time of enlistment, Henry was described as 5' 6" tall, a light complexion, light eyes, light hair.

Henry Fuller Leonard, a twenty-two-year-old who resided in Galesburg, Illinois, enlisted in the Union Army for three years as a Private. Private Leonard was assigned to 10 Aug 1861 Company C, 42nd Regiment, Illinois Infantry. On 16 Feb 1864, Private Leonard reinlisted.

On 20 Aug 1864, Private Leonard received a promotion to Sergeant. Private Leonard was listed as wounded on 29 Nov 1864 in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Sergeant Leonard was discharged on 16 Dec 1865 at Indianola, Texas, United States.

Postbellum

Henry (22) married Sarah Jane Brimmer (23) (born on 24 Jul 1841 in Warren County, Illinois) on 31 Jan 1865 in Knox County, Illinois. At the time of his death, they were married for 58 years, 5 months, 2 days. They had five known children: Doctor John Henry Leonard, Mark Loraine Leonard, Katherine Matlida Leonard Garrett, Edward Brunner Leonard, and Hubert F.  Leonard.

Henry, age fifty-eight, the head of household and a Trav Salesman School resided with his wife of thirty-five years, Sarah J. on 514 Monmouth Boulevard in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois in 1880. Sarah maintained the household and raised Hubert. It also indicates Sarah has given birth to 6 children and 4 are still living in 1900.   As of 1910 Henry, age sixty-seven, the head of household and a Canvassing employee, resided with his wife of forty-five years, Sarah J. on 514 Monmouth Boulevard in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois and they are empty nesters. It also indicates Sarah has given birth to 6 children and 4 are still living in 1910.    In 1920 Henry, age sixty-seven, the head of household, resided with his wife of fifty-five years, Sarah J. on 514 Monmouth Boulevard in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois and they are empty nesters.

Death & Burial

Henry Fuller Leonard, son of John and Louisa Leonard, died on Tuesday, 3 Jul 1923, at the age of 81 years, 1 month, 11 days at the home of his daughter Katharine Matilda Leonard Garrett, 541 Monmouth Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan due to arteriosclerosis and senility.

Those left to mourn the loss of Henry were his widow of 58 years, 5 months, 2 days, Sarah Jane Bruner Leonard and three sons, Dr. Hubert F. Leonard, Portland, Oregon, Mark Leonard, Chicago, Illlinois and Edward Leonard of Oakland, California; one daughter, Mrs. M. E. Garrett (Katharine), Detroit, Michigan; and eight grandchildren.

Henry's funeral was officiated by Rev C. E. McKinley and held at the residence on Friday, 6 Jul 1923. Henry is interred and commemorated in Hope Cemetery, Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, United States.

Henry's wife Sarah Jane Leonard died on 19 Jan 1924 in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois, United States.
